Martin Van Buren

Martin Van Buren was born December 5, 1782 in Kinderhook, New York. He married Hannah Hoes and had five children. He attended Kinderhook Academy with a law degree. He was a lawyer.

Martin was the eighth president of the United States and served from 1833-1837. President Jackson liked Van Buren and made him the secretary of state. Van Buren's believes were almost the same as President Jackson and Van Buren refused to reestablish a national bank. The result was a depression that caused a lot of businesses to fail. Van Buren failed to get re-elected in 1840.

Martin Van Buren said that the two happiest days of his life were his entrance into the office of President and his surrender of the office. While his political opponents were glad to see him go – they nicknamed him “Martin Van Ruin” - many Americans were not.

Martin Van Buren was the eighth president. He was president from 1837 to 1841.He was president for four years. Since Martin was in charge he was blamed for the starvation of the people. Some people said he ate from a gold plate and drank wine from a silver goblet.
Martin was born December 5, 1782 in Kinderhook, New York. When he was little he went to Kinderhook Academy. When he was 14 he became a law clerk. 6 years later he set up law practice. His wife was a woman named Hannah Hoes and he had 5 sons. The oldest boy was named Abraham. Then he had John, Martin, Windfield Scott and Smith Thompson.
Martin established the Independent Treasury in 1840. The Canadian Rebellion was fought in 1838. He was president during the Great Depression. People lost tons of money because the stock market crashed.
Martin was a lawyer before he was president. After that he was Andrew Jackson’s vice president. After he lost the election he went to his farm where he planted, fished and planned political comeback. Sadly, it never happened. He died at age 79 of sudden heart failure.
Martin was the first president born as an American. He had the nickname “Martin Van Ruin.” He was also awarded with two white tiger cubs. He soon had to give them to the zoo. He was a pretty cool president!
